Our Interview With The Notion Ink Guys: Fair and Balanced
The guys at NotionAddicts recorded our live video of the Notion Ink Adam Tablet interview in which we give the device a fair shake and explain ourselves to the man Rohan himself. He was very gracious and quite generous with his time. The jury’s still out in John’s mind, but we’ll see when the pre-order ships.
They’ll be publishing more of the interview shortly and we’ll have a snipped out version as well soon. What did you think?

this is indeed sweet
on personal note, i am not gone repeat mistake of not ordering last time. bring on the pre order 2.
this tablet is long ahead of others and with honeycomb will be better…
So John thinks that because Gingerbread is coming out in April or so that everyone on the Android platform should sit and twiddle their thumbs on any customization of the operating system?
Its a valid concern whether the leaf model for Notion Ink still works in Gingerbread (Rohan thinks it will work even better there, incidentally), but the solution to just wait until launch seems silly, as does downgrading the Adam based on this fear.
Hopefully the rest of the interview also talks about the different hardware choices NotionInk made.
Fair and Balanced, rofl! now to watch the video.
After watching the second half, it was fair and balanced. Maybe a little pro notion ink.
I liked the interview. I was glad to see John was also professional and courteous during the interview. Thanks John!
I’ve read on several tech sites that the screen size requirements for Honeycomb have been dismissed as simple rumor. If that is the case, then based on what Rohan said, we can expect to see Honeycomb on the Adam. But only better because it will be enhanced with the added features of the Eden UI.
So if that is the case (Honeycomb on the Adam) then I guess John does not have many concerns. And even if it’s not the case, I think the Adam will still prove very successful with the current and future versions. It is a very unique tablet and will stand out from the others which are all pretty much clones of each other with very little to offer over each other.
Buying one of the other tablets will be a decision based on manufacturer’s name or specs (and we know specs alone don’t tell the whole story).
Anyway, I look forward to when CrunchGear receives their Adam and has an opportunity for full hands-on review.
I can’t wait to get mine (hopefully some time later next week).
Matt,
Good to see Crunchgear at least giving Rohan a voice. But, did Rohan or Notionaddicts approach you or did you pursue them for the interview?
The fact that you had to put “Fair and Balanced” in the headline does indicate your own awareness to the bias inherent in CrunchGear’s articles related to ADAM.
Anyway, it’s a start, but the Jury’s still out regarding CrunchGear’s biasness.
cheers!
I spent HOURS setting it up and finding these people.
Matt
how was the time spent with Rohan outside the interview. Sometimes interviews can be inflexible, you can’t really get to know the person you are interviewing.
John Briggs is a Douche and will always be a Douche in my book. Seemingly more of a Douche in person then on paper.
I watched the interview live. Yes, it was “Fair & Balanced” this time. The right concerns were aired and they did not go overboard either way. In fact, they appreciated the tab but with concerns. A word for Rohan. If you want to differentiate your tab from others, you need to sell more than your “dream”. People pay with tangible money that expect tangible value for money in return, taking into consideration the opportunity cost. You are on the right track but you have not established yourself yet to sell just “dreams”. Show the world that you are a step ahead of Xoom or Ipad in tangible terms and the tablet world is yours. May the best tab win. And thanks for the radio. I always wondered why people never put that one. Adam 2 can have a laser projector.
“fair and balanced” – they actually have to add that to the title!!! Readers should screw these guys a bit by not visiting them. Will hit them hardest where it matters – ad revenue. Are these idiots supposed to be unbiased when it comes to reporting???
I think they are missing the point. NotionInk is in a constant fluid state. Rohann isn’t saying, “ok here it is, here is our one tablet and walk away. He is saying we realize things are constantly changing and we are riding ahead of the wave with new updates and products. The Adam tablet just happens to be their first. Every company has their first. The Adam is NotionInks “first”
Yeah we know another “news” org that claims to be fair and balanced… What do I think of your interview? Well the sound was horrible, the dragging us around to look at dinosaurs was almost as goofey as your report on mini reese’s that were melted to one of your employee’s phone. I also feel your camera guy needs to actually go to a school as his camera skills were horrible as almost every shot gave horrible angles, etc. Just being “fair and balanced,” strike that just being HONEST. Oh and you really tried hard to scoop Rohan didn’t you, no mention of the second round of pre-orders or bonus feature. No you were more concerned about YOUR ADAM. What a jerk.
I also was disappointed Biggs was the one who did the interview… you are a fat egotistical jerk. Why don’t you go and invent a product instead of taking the easy way out and trashing other companies with no real proof but “your concerns.”
Crunch is a joke, only watched today to see the broadcast of Notion Ink and will be sure to stay clear from here on out.
I think Biggs invented joojoo! Where is it now? They are selling it on Mars, anyone want to buy (you have to go to Mars; No FCC clearance for joojoo on Earth)
Easy there killer. Yes, it was apparent while watching the live feed that John is much of an egotistical a$$hole in person as he is in his writing. But, I wouldn’t say he is fat or use the word fat so derogatorily. For John to say the reason for his concern was that Honeycomb would make Notion Ink fall into obscurity was such a bunch of crap and his way of hiding behind a new line of BS without apologizing and owning up to the crap he said about Rohan and NI some time ago. When John word-vomited all the garbage about NI he didn’t know one damn thing about Honeycomb and the optimizations it would provide. John, don’t try and pretend that Honeycomb was your justification for being a douche, douche. And the same goes with all the ‘other tablets’ that are coming out that you didn’t know shiznit about all of them back when, nor did you make any other mention of that being your primary concern. The reason you were such a dick to Rohan is because a)you’re a dick, and b) because you can get away with it. NI is a small start-up company so you don’t have to worry about any repercussions. No way would you have addressed the CEO of Motorolla or Samsung in that manner if they had given you the time of day.
Also, Mathew, I do agree with your opinions on Crunch and I only visited this site today because of their live broadcast as well. As I was watching the vid I made a comment to my cousin about how much of a dick the big guy was and then I come to find out it is John Biggs himself! I laughed at the irony and had to make a comment here before permanently parting ways.
Crunchgear, it is very dissapointing that you would not only keep someone like John on your payroll, but also use him as a front man at CES that is actually interacting with other humans.
Matt Burns, you were great! I enjoyed watching your discussions and interviews in the live broadcast.
loll…! very well written! xD
Very well said. I come to this site for laughs…and I keep laughing.
We look forward to seeing your live stream of the next trade show you attend.
HAHAHAHA! Really, that is your response? You’re eagerly awaiting me to do better at that which you are paid to do and what you stake your reputation on? What a ridiculous argument, that also sidesteps the real issues mentioned. That is kinda like this scenario:
Client: That was the worst sex I have ever had!
Hooker: Well, I would like to see you do it better?
Client: Um, isn’t that why I paid you? Isn’t this what you do for a living? Your ad said you were the best and had all this amazing experience!
Sure, he could have done himself by himself, and it would have been average at best, but she is supposed to be good at what she does and bring a level of expertise to the table/floor/bed that he doesn’t have.
Common, this is what you do! Your argument for your mediocrity (at best) sucks!
I’m not much into tablets yet.
If you had paid any attention or put forthought into your interview you would realize that there is in fact a clear update path planned to honeycomb, as someone who does have an Adam on pre-order I guess I am biased, however I have seen other companies, Asus, who also plan to skin honeycomb how is this different? Why did honeycomb become some big worry point for you. Not even from a product standpoint this is the most horrifying CES interview I have seen from any news source yet, in fact you entire coverage of CES has been shameful. Do us all a favor and crawl back to whatever job you did before reporting. Thanks, TactusTexas
Crunchgear: Hey Rohan… the real ADAM finally made it to CES 2011!
Rohan: Hello Crunchgear… I thought you would get your “scam-a-meter” to CES. Is that vaporware now?
Can we possibly get a text transcript of this? It’s somewhat hard to understand with the poor mic.
Great work last night Matt,Thank you for all the work you done to get this interview sorted.
I spent hours nagging you on twitter last night but respest to you for a fair interview. As for Mr biggs i will wait and see.
Here is the story:
On one side of the world, a team of engineers were hard at work 18 hrs a day for several months/years.
On the other side, two “journalists” sitting in their plush offices were spewing cr** , mocking the product and taking personal jabs at a young entrepreneur.
Guess who ate crow?
End of story.
Burns and Biggs have irrevocably destroyed their reputation.
The least you can do is apologize and stop reporting on it – because anything you write now will be seen as biased.
Oh and one last thing:”Fair and Balanced ” in the headline!! Is that an admission of guilt?
Both of you will be some source of entertainment at a local hardware meet in Germany this Saturday!
Biggs lost all credibility with me when I read all the garbage he wrote about NotionInk over the past year.
I am a NotionInk fan but the fact is they earned it… if he had taken the time to engage Rohan on his blog or even read it he would have seen the sincerity and impressive public input Rohan was gathering.
I saw the coverage live. More than an interview, Biggs was trying to settle scores and giving out reasons for his harsh criticism and Matt was trying to sort of mediate the conversations by being a diplomat.
After listening to Bigg’s concerns I have just one question for him – What about other tablets? You never asked Motorola or Samsung or “McDonald” about what will happen when Honeycomb arrives?
Samsung Galaxy & Motorola Xoom are being praised a lot by CrunchGear. Galaxy copy pasted the iPad UI on Android, nothing new. Motorola is all what Honeycomb is, they did not do anything by themselves, still high praises.
Adam is the most accomplished tablet, atleast this is what seems after seeing all, and that too they took Froyo2.2 and took it to the next level. Completely innovative UI (not commenting on usability, as not used yet), amazing features in both hardware and software.
Are you finding it difficult to come out with an honest appreciation just because this is a startup and not an apple or orange? Go eat fruits man, I expected a lot from you guys. Did you knew Steve Jobs or Bill Gates before they came out with their firsts???
The tablet is tooooo late. The adam still isn’t available. If they realeased the Adam in early 2010 they would had a better tablet than all the regular andróid tablet.
But now thr big guys has entered the game. For example when motorola showed us the xoom they will release it very soon. Notion ink is teasing us almost 1.5 years and still no Adam.
I think that Notion Ink will be blowing out of the water.
If brand means that much to you (and thats not a bad thing at all), you are better off waiting a month or two longer and jumping into the xoom bandwagon…
Personally for me, potential is what counts and brand is quite low on my priorities list- Thats not to say I would buy cheap imitation stuff to do a favour to my wallet- I insit on quality. And from where I stand- Notion Ink offers quality and incredible potential- and I am willing to support them by placing my trust in them.
You know “big players” did not become “big players” overnight- Constant push for innovation is what gave them that status. And I am hopeful that one day, Notion Ink will be the one to beat- a la Apple or Motorola (or others) of today.
One of the reasons i chose to buy a Adam pad was the Qi display, the other was the design concept, i could understand the way they were building this pad, they weren’t trying to copy apple, they were trying to make it better.
That’s true Rahul. I am following the Adam since the beginning. I was really frustrated because i wanted to buy the Adam sow hard. But they kept delaying the Adam on and on and on.
You know…the hardware on the Adam was in the early 2010 very special. But now every tablet will have an Tegra 2 not 512mb of ram but 1 gig or two gig. Etc etc.
Sow when they will release the adam…the hardware will be old.
Honycomb will not be there for the adam because of the minimum screen resolution has to be 1280×800.
I heard the wil not be an gingerbread update. This means the adam will be an regular tablet with an older Phone os and a skin ontop of it called eden.
@Larossa Could you please show me where it is (officially) mentioned that 1200 X 800 is the minimum required resolution?
There will not be a minimum resolution of 1200×800. That would be insane, and insanely stupid, and anyway, doesn’t make sense as a concept. That would be like saying Linux or Windows or OS X has a “minimum resolution.”
Also, Adam is “released,” NOW. It’s got 1GB, not 512KB of RAM, and that’s still pretty darn good — offhand I can’t think of an Android tablet that matches it.
Part 2 of the CrunchGear Interview with Notion Ink has been added.

Also, thank you CrunchGear for taking the time to bring us a live stream of CES and a hands-on of the Notion Ink Adam.
The audio is poor, I’m giving up.
Hello RED.. Am happy to hear that minimum requirments is false.. So it could be possible that Honeycomb will run on the Adam.
http://androidcommunity.com/honeycomb-hardware-requirements-false-20110105/
Happy to see that the resolution requirements were fake, and I can’t wait to see how Eden evolves once it is updated for Honeycomb!
“The jury’s still out in John’s mind”?
Hoo, boy.
You guys reeeaaaally need to get over the CrunchPad already.
Dudes: It’s just technology. It’s not asking to date you, it’s not asking you to BELIEVE in it. It’s not that powerful.
Having seen Honeycomb, I hope Notion Ink can be quick with their software updates. Although, I have to admit, Eden is closer to Honeycomb than Gingerbread already. PixelQi is a big, big advantage IMO. Tegra is still a definitive standard for about a year. I know a lot of people criticise them for taking so long, but the problem was Tegra and Android weren’t on the same wavelength, and the work Nvidia and Notion Ink both have done conjunctively has actually helped Motorola and the others to get on the Tegra bandwagon.
I’d love to really test it out myself and ensure the UI is smooth sailing and responsive. If it is, it still is better than Xoom.
Wow… another tablet.
Two key points in favor of NI Adam.
1) Pixel Qi. I’m usually a fan of vanilla Android, but for this reason I am excited for Adam. It will replace my Kindle with bigger, touch screen, while also being a fun tablet running a (mostly) familiar OS.
2) Wifi only option. Everyone’s use case is different, but for me, this is the deal breaker for Xoom.
I am not worried about the tech specs of Adam. They are superior to Xoom and I am buying one. My worry is about logistics. Rohan should hire some business guys now to take care of that segment and focus on the tech stuff. I am waiting for pre-order 2 and I will go for Adam over Xoom. Motorola is an old dog and I don’t expect any new tricks from them (other than what the stock 3.0 provides). If Adam could make 2.2 at par with 3.0, imagine what they can do to 3.0!!! Adam is a step ahead.
What’s with the tone you are using Biggs?
Also you could have mirrored Rohan’s graciousness and acknowledged that you jumped the gun. People always root for the nice, the chap who keeps it fair. Instead what we have you still trying to get some brownie points with ridiculous concerns. It is not as if other manufacturers do not offer their own UI over stock Android. And the device very well allows you to switch back to the stock Android desktop (and this will presumably be the case with Honeycomb as well) with ease.
Poor show Biggs, poor show.
Looks like Mr. Biggs has been eating more than his fair share of humble pie (quite literally) since his first cowardly attempts to belittle a well meaning start-up. I can only smile when morons with big mouths and no brains get put in their place.
Shame on you Biggs, you are a liability and should be put out to pasture.
This tablet is the Cat’s Pyjamas time shall prove this.
