Kinect, for the most part, is pretty neat. While it’s enjoyable to dance around in front of your TV, my favorite part is being able to “Minority Report” the menus. I feel so cool, demoing that. Now, PrimeSense, the company behind the motion control tech on the Kinect are bringing that experience to the PC with what they call WAVI Xtion.
Name jokes aside, this is a big change in the way we interact with our machines. Even if it doesn’t work that well at first, you can bet that in only a few years it will be second nature.
PrimeSense has announced that they will partner with ASUS for development and plan on offering an app store with apps that take advantage of the camera. Hopefully, the system can be used in a smaller space that what the Kinect requires.
It’s unclear if Apple fans will get the technology also, but we do know that Apple has patents out for motion control. We already learned that PrimeSense has put together a consortium called Open Natural Interaction to offer standards and libraries for developers. This might have a future.
