T-Mobile USA CEO and President Philipp Humm
Highlights the Company’s Network Leadership
and Focus on Fueling Data Adoption

T-Mobile Doubles the Speed of America’s Largest 4G Network and Introduces Its First 4G Tablet: the Dell Streak 7

LAS VEGAS, Nev. and BELLEVUE, Wash. — Jan. 6, 2011 — Today at the 2011 International CES, T-Mobile USA CEO and President Philipp Humm highlighted the company’s network leadership, supported by Nielsen data confirming that T-Mobile delivered the fastest wireless data performance in the top 100 U.S. markets during the second half of 2010.1 In addition, Humm announced the nationwide availability of T-Mobile’s 4G network, now reaching approximately 200 million people in 100 major metropolitan areas.

“In 2010, we delivered on our ambitious goal to become America’s largest 4G network, and this year our customers will be able to experience speeds equivalent to home broadband while on the go,” said Humm. “We’ll continue to focus on fueling the adoption of mobile data, by offering innovative and affordable smartphones and tablets, as well as aggressive data plan pricing and rich and compelling data services.”

T-Mobile also unveiled plans to double the speed of its 4G network this year, which will be capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 42 Mbps. Moreover, the company announced that in 2011 it will launch at least 25 new 4G devices, starting with its first 4G tablet — the Dell™ Streak 7, expected to be available at T-Mobile stores across the country in the coming weeks. The company vowed to aggressively expand and evolve its 4G smartphone portfolio, launching additional devices capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 21 Mbps in the first half of 2011, and smartphones capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 42 Mbps in the second half of the year.

The cutting-edge download speed was demonstrated today by company representatives using a T-Mobile laptop stick developed by ZTE, capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 42 Mbps and slated to launch in the first half of 2011. By doubling the speed of its 4G network, T-Mobile will offer its customers an unprecedented wireless experience, fueled by improved performance in the use of rich media applications, including creating and sharing mobile content, streaming video, and participating in multi-player gaming and videoconferencing.

The company expects 140 million Americans in 25 metro areas to have access to these increased 4G speeds by mid-2011. T-Mobile’s enhanced speed capabilities will also benefit its customers using existing 3G devices for data services, as the backward-compatible network enables 3G devices to achieve their maximum speed performance.

“We are pleased to support T-Mobile as it continues to deploy and develop its 4G network, which today is delivering next-generation speeds and performance to hundreds of millions of customers,” said Angel Ruiz, president and CEO, Ericsson North America. “We are confident that HSPA+ will continue to offer a viable and cost-effective alternative to LTE and WiMAX, providing a comparable 4G experience to customers for the foreseeable future. And, with a strong and growing ecosystem of network equipment and handsets, we anticipate that HSPA+ can develop into one of the most advanced technology platforms in the industry.”

“Consumers are increasingly embracing the benefits of smartphones, with 80 percent of U.S. mobile customers wanting a smartphone, and as many as 100 million of them not yet having one,” said Cole Brodman, chief marketing officer, T-Mobile USA. “Our compelling offering of affordable broadband devices and consumer-friendly data plan pricing will enable customers to step up to mobile data and 4G, and our customers will not pay a toll to ride on our 4G superhighway.”

About the Dell™ Streak 7
T-Mobile’s first 4G tablet, the Dell Streak 7, is capable of peak speeds up to 21 Mbps to provide a super-fast 4G mobile broadband experience for watching movies and entertainment through preloaded content and thousands of widgets, games and applications available on Android Market™. Running the Android 2.2 operating system, the Dell Streak 7 features a brilliant 7-inch WVGA touch screen with Gorilla® Glass, dual core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and full Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1 support.

These guys have been quiet for years.

Atheros makes almost all wi-fi chips built into mobile devices. In short, anything that doesn’t use a cellular network, they’re on top of, and they’ve spurred the evolution of Wi-Fi over the past few years. Now, however, they’re part of Qualcomm, putting that company into a new, extremely lucrative position. In short, Qualcomm now owns a vast swathe of the mobile semiconductor space.

The sale is for $45 a share or about $3.1 billion. While it’s hard to tell if it’s slightly undervalued, this move definitely cements Qualcomm’s position in the mobile space and should have Intel and AMD concerned as you can now, feasibly, create a Qualcomm-only device using processors, cellular, and Wi-Fi chips from one vendor.

Qualcomm to Acquire Atheros, Leader in Connectivity & Networking Solutions

— Accelerates Expansion of Company’s Semiconductor Business into Adjacent Markets —

SAN DIEGO and SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM) and Atheros Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATHR), today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement whereby Qualcomm intends to acquire Atheros, a leader in innovative technologies for wireless and wired local area connectivity in the computing, networking and consumer electronics industries. The acquisition is intended to help accelerate the expansion of Qualcomm’s technologies and platforms to new businesses beyond cellular and provide access to significant new growth opportunities.

Qualcomm has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase Atheros for $45 per share in cash, representing an enterprise value of $3.1 billion. The transaction has been approved by the Qualcomm and Atheros boards of directors and is subject to customary closing conditions, including the receipt of domestic and foreign regulatory approvals and the approval of Atheros’ stockholders. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2011. Excluding amortization of acquired intangibles, Qualcomm expects the acquisition to be modestly accretive to earnings per share in fiscal year 2012, the first full year of combined operations. Qualcomm intends to finalize its estimates of the transaction’s financial impact, as well as the accounting for the transaction, upon deal close.

“It is Qualcomm’s strategy to continually integrate additional technologies into mobile devices to make them the primary way that people communicate, compute and access content. This acquisition is a natural extension of that strategy into other types of devices,” said Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, chairman and CEO of Qualcomm. “The combination of Qualcomm and Atheros is intended to accelerate this opportunity by utilizing best-in-class products for communications, computing and consumer electronics to broaden existing customer relationships and expand access to new partners and distribution channels.”

Atheros’ current president and CEO, Dr. Craig H. Barratt, is expected to join Qualcomm as president of Qualcomm Networking & Connectivity.

“Qualcomm and Atheros have a long history of collaboration and share a culture of technical innovation and execution excellence,” Barratt said. “The Atheros team will build upon Qualcomm’s strengths and leadership to bolster our customers’ ability to deliver innovative and differentiated products in the increasingly connected world.”

“With this acquisition and our complementary products, Qualcomm will be in a strong position to take our successful mobile strategy of bringing the best technologies together into a systems solution and apply this to new opportunities,” said Steve Mollenkopf, EVP and group president of Qualcomm. “We see this strategy as central to helping our customers capitalize on the ubiquitous connectivity and seamless experiences that are developing across mobile phones, computing and consumer electronics.”

Here we go: the first outrageous claim of CES, right on time. Peep Wireless is attempting to create ad hoc P2P networks between mobile devices by turning them into "client/server viral transmitter/receivers." What does that mean? It basically piggy backs on the phone's wireless connection to connect one phone to the next and then route calls that way. Obviously we're dealing with a few fatal flaws. First, if there's only one Peep device in the area, you're SOL. Second, carriers will never allow this, also putting you SOL.

Here we go: the first outrageous claim of CES, right on time. Peep Wireless is attempting to create ad hoc P2P networks between mobile devices by turning them into “client/server viral transmitter/receivers.” What does that mean? It basically piggy backs on the phone’s wireless connection to connect one phone to the next and then route calls that way. Obviously we’re dealing with a few fatal flaws. First, if there’s only one Peep device in the area, you’re SOL. Second, carriers will never allow this, also putting you SOL.

Sascha Segan at PCMag asked how it worked and got this reply:

“Anything with ROM or RAM on it and a bus can use our system,” a company representative said in an email. “Any game box, any car with programmable Bluetooth, any PC in a café with Wi-Fi, any device you can download to or any device that uses a voicemail system. The first app we intend to launch is the iPhone App, to be followed by the Droid app, to be followed by the Win[dows] phone app to be followed by an API for anybody left out in the phone world.”

The claim that Peep is able to use bandwidth without really connecting to a cell tower is ludicrous and unless it’s all Wi-Fi/Bluetooth all the time, this will never work. But, as we all know, CES just isn’t the same without wild people saying crazy things.
